Harry Potter Book Facts

The Harry Potter books have been enormously successful; here are some facts about them:

  • The first Harry Potter book, "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's (Sorcerer's) Stone," was first published in 1997 by Bloomsbury Publishing
  • J. K. Rowling plans to write seven books, each covering one of Harry's seven years at Hogwarts
  • The books have been translated into 47 languages and more are planned
  • Whilst the books remain largely the same some changes are made as they are distributed to other countries. For example, the American version of "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's (Sorcerer's) Stone" is called "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone"
  • Four different editions of the books are available in the UK; these are hardback, paperback, adult and special editions. Large print and audio versions of all books are also available
  • Due to publishing rights UK versions of the Harry Potter books cannot be sold in America
  • Over 1.3 million paperback copies of "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's (Sorcerer's) Stone" have been sold in the UK alone
  • The Harry Potter books topped the best-seller list of 1999 for the whole year
  • A poll placed J. K. Rowling's books as the second greatest children's books of all time, only beaten by Roald Dahl, who wrote children's books for 40 years
